Almost every guide to the best credit card for online shopping ranks cards by their headline rate. That number is now the least useful figure on the page, because on most of these cards it applies to a handful of named merchants and to nothing else in your cart.
We tested these cards against a realistic order instead: a gadget from one marketplace, clothing from a second site, a grocery delivery, one gift card and one item converted to instalments. On several widely recommended cards, most of that cart earned the base rate or nothing at all, while the card advertised a number four times higher. That gap between the advertised rate and the earned rate is what this page is about.
Below are eight cards that genuinely work for Indian online shopping in 2026, sorted by the kind of shopper each one suits, plus the 2026 changes that make most existing comparisons unreliable and an honest note on the strong cards we cannot help you apply for.
What Changed in 2026 (Read This Before You Apply)
Four changes landed between mid 2025 and the middle of 2026, and together they make most of the currently ranking comparisons unreliable.
The Flat Rate Cashback Card Was Rebuilt in April 2026
The most widely recommended online card in India had its per cycle ceiling reduced, its exclusion list extended to cover digital gaming, tolls and government transactions, and, crucially, its allowance divided into separate online and offline pots. Before that change an unused offline allowance effectively subsidised a heavy online month. It no longer does. Every article that describes this card as an unrestricted flat rate cashback card is describing the previous version.
A Popular Low Fee Partner Card Was Cut in 2025
The partner list on one of the best known low fee online cards was reduced during 2025, and a major food delivery partner moved from the top tier to a lower one. More importantly, the two largest general marketplaces in India were never on that partner list at all, despite being named in numerous third party articles about the card. Check the current list, not an old review.
A Co-Branded Ecosystem Card Changed Its Payment Rule in May 2026
From May 2026 the top rate on one ecosystem card applies only when that card itself makes the payment inside the app. Routing a different card through the same app, which was a well known trick, no longer earns the elevated rate. The currency also expires roughly a year after the month in which it is earned.
A Fashion Co-Brand Was Discontinued
One of the co-branded fashion cards was discontinued during 2025 and its holders were migrated to a general card from the same bank. Any comparison that still recommends it is out of date. Fashion shopping is now served through the general marketplace co-brands and through selectable category packs instead.
Best Credit Card for Online Shopping: Quick Comparison
The column to read first is merchant scope. It tells you whether the headline rate applies to your whole cart or to a short list of sites.

The 8 Best Credit Cards for Online Shopping in India
Each card is judged on what fraction of a realistic mixed cart actually earns, not on the biggest number in its brochure.
1. SBI Cashback Credit Card – Best Overall Flat Rate Online Card
If you want one card that earns properly on a cart spanning three different websites, this is still the answer. There is no partner list to memorise, no category to select and no app to open first. Almost every online merchant earns the same accelerated rate, which means a mixed order of electronics from one site, clothing from another and a household item from a third all earn together rather than splitting into a headline rate you rarely qualify for and a base rate you did not expect. The cashback lands automatically as a statement credit rather than as points you have to redeem.
You need to know what changed on the first of April 2026, because every article still ranking for this keyword describes the old card. The per cycle ceiling was reduced, digital gaming, toll and government transactions were added to an already long exclusion list, and, most importantly, the allowance was split into separate online and offline pots. That last change is the one nobody explains. Previously an unused offline allowance effectively cushioned a heavy online month. It no longer does, so a big sale week now exhausts the online pot on its own.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | Accelerated cashback, credited to the statement |
| Merchant Scope | Flat rate across almost all online merchants |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Capped per statement cycle, and split into separate online and offline pots since April 2026 |
| Key Online Exclusions | Utilities, insurance, fuel, rent, wallet loads, education, jewellery, railways, tolls, government, merchant EMI, digital gaming |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Annual fee applies, waived on annual spends |
| Redemption Route | Automatic statement credit above a minimum, no manual redemption |
👍 Pros
- ✓ No merchant whitelist, so mixed carts earn cleanly
- ✓ Cashback arrives automatically as a statement credit
- ✓ Strongest coverage of any card on this list
- ✓ Widely available and easy to obtain
👎 Cons
- ✗ Exclusion list was widened in April 2026
- ✗ Online and offline allowances are now separate pots
- ✗ Offline spending earns only a small base rate
2. Axis Flipkart Credit Card – Best for Flipkart and Myntra Households
If a large share of your online spending goes through one platform group, a co-branded card beats a flat rate card comfortably, and this is the strongest such card we can offer. The top rate applies on the platform itself, fashion shopping now sits inside the accelerated tier rather than outside it, and a preferred partner list extends the benefit to travel and food ordering. For a household that genuinely buys most things in one place, the maths is not close.
The detail that no competitor draws out is the cap cycle. This card caps its accelerated earning per statement quarter rather than per month, which changes the verdict depending on how you shop. A quarterly cap absorbs a single heavy sale week beautifully, because you are not limited by one month allowance. It then leaves you at the base rate for the rest of the quarter. A monthly capped flat rate card behaves in exactly the opposite way. Match the cap cycle to your buying rhythm and you will pick correctly.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | Accelerated cashback at the partner platforms |
| Merchant Scope | Single platform group, plus a preferred partner list |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Capped per statement quarter, not per month |
| Key Online Exclusions | Wallet loads, gift cards, EMI conversion, rent, fuel, utilities, insurance, education |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Annual fee applies, waived on annual spends |
| Redemption Route | Cashback adjusted against the statement |
👍 Pros
- ✓ Highest rate available on its platform group
- ✓ Fashion shopping sits in the accelerated tier
- ✓ Quarterly cap absorbs a single big sale week
- ✓ Preferred partners extend the benefit beyond shopping
👎 Cons
- ✗ Base rate only outside the partner ecosystem
- ✗ Card was reset in June 2025, so older reviews overstate it
- ✗ Quarterly cap leaves a long gap after a heavy month
3. HDFC Millennia Credit Card – Best for Shoppers Who Stick to a Few Big Sites
Millennia is the card most people already have, and whether it is good for online shopping depends entirely on where you shop. Its headline rate applies to a fixed list of around ten named online merchants and nowhere else. If your regular order history reads like that list, the card is excellent. If it does not, you are earning the base rate on most of your cart while believing you are earning the headline rate, which is the single most common misunderstanding in this category.
This is the difference between a whitelist card and a flat rate card, and it is a concept no competing article names. A whitelist card is only as good as the list, and lists change without notice. Before you rely on this card, open your last three months of orders and check how many of those sites appear on the current list. Also factor in the redemption friction: converting points to a statement credit carries a fee, there is a monthly redemption ceiling, and points expire after two years if you forget about them.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | High rate at named merchants, base rate elsewhere, paid as CashPoints |
| Merchant Scope | Merchant whitelist of around ten named online sites |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Capped per statement month |
| Key Online Exclusions | Fuel, rent, government payments, wallet loads, prepaid and gift cards, education via third party apps, all EMI |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Annual fee applies, waived on annual spends |
| Redemption Route | Points to statement credit with a redemption fee, monthly redemption cap, points expire after two years |
👍 Pros
- ✓ Very high rate at the named merchants
- ✓ Widely held, so most readers already have one
- ✓ Strong offline base rate as well
- ✓ Reliable if your shopping matches the list
👎 Cons
- ✗ Top rate applies only to a fixed merchant whitelist
- ✗ Redemption carries a fee and a monthly ceiling
- ✗ Points expire after two years
4. HDFC Pixel Play Credit Card – Best Pick Your Own Merchants Card
This card answers the whitelist problem directly by letting you build your own list. You select the cashback packs that match how you actually spend, and you separately nominate an e-commerce site for an additional accelerated rate. If your online buying is concentrated on a platform the banks do not normally reward, this is the only card on the page that lets you point the benefit at it. It is also lifetime free, and the base rate on everything outside your chosen packs runs without a monthly ceiling.
The honest limitation is that each pack carries its own monthly ceiling, so the accelerated benefit is spread thin rather than concentrated. This is a card that rewards active management: choose your packs to match the season, revisit them when your habits change, and check the current pack composition before you apply because it has changed since launch. For a reader who enjoys optimising, it returns more than any fixed list card. For someone who wants to set and forget, the flat rate card at the top of this list is the better answer.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | Accelerated cashback on chosen packs, plus one chosen e-commerce merchant |
| Merchant Scope | Self selected packs rather than a bank set list |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Each pack capped separately per month, base rate uncapped |
| Key Online Exclusions | Fuel, rent, EMI, wallet loads, government payments |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Lifetime free |
| Redemption Route | CashPoints to statement credit, subject to redemption rules |
👍 Pros
- ✓ Lifetime free with an uncapped base rate
- ✓ You choose the accelerated merchants yourself
- ✓ RuPay variant supports UPI payments
- ✓ Packs can be changed as your habits change
👎 Cons
- ✗ Each pack has its own monthly ceiling
- ✗ Needs active management to be worth it
- ✗ Pack composition has changed since launch
5. Tata Neu HDFC Bank Credit Card – Best for One Brand Ecosystem
Where a co-branded card ties you to one website, this one ties you to a family of them. Electronics, fashion, groceries, pharmacy and travel all sit inside the same brand group, and they all pay the same elevated currency. For an Indian household that already buys its groceries, its appliances and its medicines from those brands, the currency accumulates faster than a general card could manage, because everything is feeding one pot rather than three separate reward schemes.
Two 2026 changes matter. From May 2026 the top rate applies only when this card itself makes the payment inside the app, so routing another card through the same app no longer earns the elevated rate. And the currency expires roughly a year after the month in which it was earned, so it must be spent rather than saved. It is also worth knowing that separate caps apply to rewards earned through UPI, which is relevant because the card supports RuPay UPI linking. Loyal to the ecosystem, this is excellent. Indifferent to it, look elsewhere.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | Brand currency at partner brands, base rate elsewhere |
| Merchant Scope | A single brand ecosystem covering retail, grocery, pharmacy and travel |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Monthly caps, with separate caps on UPI spends |
| Key Online Exclusions | Wallet loads, gift cards, fuel, rent, EMI conversion |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Annual fee applies, waived on annual spends |
| Redemption Route | Brand currency spent inside the ecosystem, expires about a year after earning |
👍 Pros
- ✓ One elevated rate across many everyday brands
- ✓ Covers groceries and pharmacy as well as shopping
- ✓ Supports RuPay UPI linking
- ✓ Currency builds quickly for loyal households
👎 Cons
- ✗ Top rate requires paying with this card inside the app
- ✗ Currency expires about a year after it is earned
- ✗ Rival platforms earn only the base rate
6. SBI Simply Click Credit Card – Best Low Fee Card for Specific Partner Sites
This card has been recommended for online shopping for years, and most of those recommendations are wrong in one specific way. Its top multiplier applies to a named partner list covering travel booking, pharmacy, fashion, entertainment and gifting sites. India two largest general marketplaces are not on that list. If you came here expecting a high rate on your usual marketplace orders, this is not the card, and several first page articles will still tell you otherwise.
What it genuinely is, is a very low fee card that pays well on a specific and useful set of sites, with a modest multiplier on other online spending as a floor. If you book travel online, order medicines, buy fashion from the named site and book entertainment, the partner list matches your life closely and the annual fee is trivially recovered. It also earns its annual fee waiver on online spending alone. Just apply with the correct expectation, and check the current partner list rather than one from an old review, because the line up was cut during 2025.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | High reward multiplier at named partners, lower multiplier on other online spends |
| Merchant Scope | A named partner list covering travel, pharmacy, fashion and entertainment |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Capped per statement cycle |
| Key Online Exclusions | Utilities, insurance, fuel, rent, wallet loads, EMI conversion |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Low annual fee, waived on annual online spends |
| Redemption Route | Reward points redeemed through the issuer catalogue |
👍 Pros
- ✓ Very low annual fee, waived on online spends alone
- ✓ High multiplier at the named partner sites
- ✓ Useful floor rate on other online spending
- ✓ Easy approval for a first credit card
👎 Cons
- ✗ The two largest marketplaces are not partners
- ✗ Partner list was cut during 2025
- ✗ Points need manual redemption through a catalogue
7. HDFC Pixel Go Credit Card – Best Lifetime Free Card for Portal Bookings
Set your expectations correctly with this one and it is a genuinely useful free card. Its accelerated rate applies to purchases made through the bank own shopping and travel portal rather than directly on retail websites, which is a meaningfully different thing and is the reason we have placed it here rather than higher. Booking a flight, a hotel or a gadget through that portal earns well. Buying the same gadget directly on the retailer site earns the base rate.
What makes it worth holding anyway is that it costs nothing, the base rate on ordinary spending runs without a monthly ceiling, and the RuPay variant lets you pay by UPI. That last point carries a catch worth stating: earning on UPI transactions sits under its own separate monthly ceiling, usually lower than the card ceiling, so the same purchase can earn differently depending on how you paid. As a free companion card for portal bookings and UPI payments, it earns its place. As your main online shopping card, it does not.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | Accelerated cashback on the bank portal, base rate on other online spends |
| Merchant Scope | The issuer shopping and travel portal, not general e-commerce |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Portal and UPI earning capped monthly, base rate uncapped |
| Key Online Exclusions | Fuel, rent, government payments, wallet loads, EMI |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Lifetime free |
| Redemption Route | CashPoints to statement credit, subject to redemption rules |
👍 Pros
- ✓ Lifetime free with an uncapped base rate
- ✓ Strong earning on portal bookings including travel
- ✓ RuPay variant works on UPI
- ✓ Good free companion to a flat rate card
👎 Cons
- ✗ Accelerated rate is portal only, not general e-commerce
- ✗ UPI earning has its own lower monthly ceiling
- ✗ Not a primary online shopping card
8. Uni GoldX Credit Card – Best for Turning Online Spending Into Gold
This is the outlier on the page and it suits a particular kind of buyer. Instead of cashback or points, your spending accrues as digital gold, which for many Indian households is a more natural savings instrument than a reward catalogue nobody enjoys browsing. It is lifetime free, it works across online and offline spending at a flat rate rather than through a merchant list, and the value does not expire the way brand currency and reward points do.
The trade off is straightforward. A flat gold accrual will not beat a well matched co-branded card on the platform where you spend most, and the value of what you accumulate moves with the gold price rather than staying fixed, which cuts both ways. It also supports a RuPay route, which extends its usefulness to smaller merchants that accept only UPI. Treat it as a free, no maintenance card that quietly turns ordinary shopping into a small savings habit, not as the card you reach for during a big sale.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Online Earn Rate and Form | Flat rate credited as digital gold rather than points or cashback |
| Merchant Scope | Flat rate across online and offline spends |
| Earn Cap and Reset Cycle | Flat earning with programme level caps |
| Key Online Exclusions | Wallet loads, rent, fuel, EMI conversion, cash advances |
| Fee Tier and Waiver | Lifetime free |
| Redemption Route | Accumulated as digital gold, held rather than redeemed against a catalogue |
👍 Pros
- ✓ Lifetime free with a flat rate across all spending
- ✓ Rewards accrue as gold rather than expiring points
- ✓ No merchant list or category to manage
- ✓ Works online and offline at the same rate
👎 Cons
- ✗ Flat rate is beaten by a matched co-branded card
- ✗ Value moves with the gold price
- ✗ Not designed for sale season optimisation
Flat Rate, Whitelist or Co-Branded: The Three Card Types
Almost every disappointment in this category comes from not knowing which of these three you are holding.
Flat rate online cards pay the same accelerated rate on nearly every website, with a published exclusion list. They are the best default because they earn on your whole cart no matter where the items came from. Their weakness is a monthly ceiling that a single big purchase can exhaust.
Merchant whitelist cards pay a much higher rate, but only at a fixed list of named sites. The rate looks better and frequently pays less, because a normal Indian cart spans several sites and only one or two are on the list. The list also changes without notice.
Co-branded platform cards pay the best rate of all, on exactly one platform group. They win decisively if your shopping is concentrated there and lose badly if it is not.
The practical conclusion, which no competitor states: hold one flat rate card as your default and add one co-brand only for the platform you genuinely use most. Two co-brands and no flat rate card is the setup that leaves the most money on the table.
The Mixed Cart Test
Picture a normal month. You order a phone accessory from one marketplace, a shirt from a fashion site, a grocery delivery, a gift card for a relative, and you convert a larger purchase to instalments.
On a flat rate card, the accessory, the shirt and the grocery order all earn at the accelerated rate. The gift card earns nothing and the instalment purchase earns nothing, because both sit on the universal exclusion list.
On a whitelist card, only the sites that appear on the list earn the headline rate. The rest of the cart drops to the base rate, which is often a fraction of what you expected. On a co-branded card, only the items bought inside that platform group earn well and everything else earns the floor rate.
That is the whole argument in one paragraph. The best card for online shopping is not the one with the highest number, it is the one that earns on the largest share of what you actually buy.
Online Spends That Earn Nothing on Almost Every Card
Gift cards and vouchers. Buying store credit is excluded across the board. If you buy a voucher and then spend it, you earn on neither leg.
Wallet top ups. Loading money into an app wallet is coded separately and earns nothing on essentially every card here.
Instalment conversions. Converting an order to instalments, including the no cost variety, moves it into an excluded category on nearly every card on this list. You get the instalment plan and lose the cashback.
Rent, utilities, insurance and education. These are excluded from accelerated online earning almost universally, and on several cards they are excluded from all earning.
Government payments, tolls and fuel. Added to several exclusion lists during 2026, including on the most popular flat rate card in April.
Sale Season: How the Discounts Actually Stack
The instant discount lands first. A sale time bank offer reduces the amount your card is charged at checkout. Your cashback is then calculated on that reduced amount, not the original price, so the two benefits do not simply add together.
Your card cashback comes second. It applies to what was actually charged, and it still counts against your monthly or quarterly ceiling.
Instalment conversion cancels the cashback. This is the expensive mistake. On nearly every card here, converting a sale purchase to instalments removes it from earning entirely, so a shopper chasing both ends up with neither.
Cap cycle decides who wins the sale. A quarterly capped co-brand absorbs one heavy sale week comfortably. A monthly capped flat rate card will hit its ceiling in that week and earn the base rate afterwards. Plan large purchases around whichever cycle your card uses.
Confirm the offer at checkout. Sale partner offers change every year and are announced close to the event, so treat any list of participating cards, including ours, as a pattern rather than a promise.
Does RuPay on UPI Help at Online Checkout?
Not usually, and this is worth understanding because it runs against the general advice we give elsewhere on this site.
Paying by UPI at an e-commerce checkout is typically treated as a UPI transaction rather than a card transaction. That means your card accelerated online rate does not apply, the issuer separate and usually lower UPI reward ceiling does apply, and any sale specific card offer, which is tied to the card being used directly, will not trigger.
RuPay on UPI is genuinely excellent for small merchants, local shops and QR payments where a card machine is not available. For a large online order on a major marketplace during a sale, pay with the card directly.
Other Cards Worth Knowing About
Being straight with you costs nothing and saves you a wasted application.
The Amazon Pay ICICI Bank card remains the strongest option for one of the two large marketplaces, is lifetime free, and pays a higher rate to Prime members. Its exclusion list was widened in October 2025. HSBC Live Plus is the best cash paid as cash card in the market after its mid 2026 revaluation, although both large marketplaces sit in its base tier rather than its top tier. The Swiggy HDFC Bank cards, now split into two tiers, are the best option for food and quick commerce ordering. IDFC FIRST SWYP is a credible low fee entry card for online and subscription spending.
We should also be honest about one card on our own list that we did not shortlist. Axis Cashback pays a strong tiered online rate, but it only rewards consistently high monthly online volume, and there are recurring reports of genuine online transactions being tagged as offline on that card, which costs the holder the accelerated rate. If your online spending is very large and consistent, it is worth a look. For everyone else it is a worse fit than the flat rate card at the top of this page.
How to Choose the Best Card for Online Shopping
Open your last three months of orders first. Count how many different websites appear. If it is more than three, you want a flat rate card, not a whitelist card.
Check the cap cycle, not just the cap. Monthly and quarterly ceilings suit completely different shopping rhythms.
Read the exclusion list before the reward rate. If half your cart is gift cards and instalment purchases, no card on this page will help you.
Check the redemption route. Automatic statement credit beats a points catalogue with a redemption fee, a monthly redemption ceiling and an expiry date.
Do not hold two co-brands and no flat rate card. That is the most common and most expensive setup mistake in this category.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which credit card gives the highest cashback on the big marketplaces in India?
It depends which marketplace. For one of the two large general platforms and its fashion sibling, the co-branded Axis Flipkart card pays the highest rate we can offer. For the other large marketplace, the strongest card in the market is co-branded to a different issuer and is not one we can help you apply for, so we have named it in the honest section rather than pretending otherwise. If you split your shopping across both, a flat rate online card such as SBI Cashback will usually beat holding either co-brand alone.
Did the SBI Cashback card get worse in April 2026?
Yes, in three ways. The cashback ceiling per statement cycle was reduced, digital gaming, toll and government transactions were added to the exclusion list, and the allowance was split into separate online and offline pots. That last change is the one that actually alters behaviour, because an unused offline allowance no longer cushions a heavy online month. It is still the best broad coverage online card we can offer, but it is a weaker card than the one most articles describe.
Why did I get no cashback on my online order?
The three usual causes are all avoidable. Your card may reward a whitelist of named merchants and the site you used is not on it. You may have bought something on the universal exclusion list, most often a gift card, a wallet top up, or an order converted to instalments. Or you crossed your monthly or quarterly ceiling earlier in the cycle and everything since has been earning the base rate. Check the transaction on your statement before contacting the issuer.
Is one flat rate online card better than two co-branded cards?
For most people, yes. A flat rate card earns on the whole cart regardless of which site it came from, which matters because a typical Indian household buys across at least three or four platforms in a month. Two co-branded cards only win if your spending is genuinely concentrated on those two platforms. The strongest realistic setup is one flat rate card as your default plus one co-brand for the platform you genuinely use most.
Do sale time bank offers work alongside my card regular cashback?
Usually yes, but the order matters and it reduces what you earn. The sale instant discount is applied at checkout and lowers the amount your card is actually charged. Your card cashback is then calculated on that lower amount, not on the original price. Converting the same order to instalments is the bigger trap, because instalment converted transactions are excluded from earning on nearly every card on this list, so you can end up with the instalment plan and no cashback at all.
Final Verdict
For most Indian households the SBI Cashback card is still the best credit card for online shopping, because it earns on the largest share of a real cart with no merchant list to manage. Accept that it is a weaker card than it was before April 2026, and plan around the separate online and offline allowances.
If your shopping is genuinely concentrated on one platform group, add the matching co-brand. The Axis Flipkart card is the strongest such card we can offer and its quarterly cap suits sale season buying particularly well. If you would rather not pay an annual fee at all, the lifetime free HDFC Pixel Play card lets you point the accelerated rate at merchants of your own choosing.
Whichever you pick, remember the two rules that decide your actual return: never buy gift cards or convert a purchase to instalments if you want the cashback, and match the cap cycle to how you shop rather than to how the card is advertised.
