Choosing the best credit card for hotel booking is a different exercise from choosing a flight card, and every page ranking for this search treats them the same way. A hotel booking is not just a transaction to be multiplied. It is a choice of channel, and the channel decides whether you also collect the hotel own points, whether the stay counts toward elite status, and whether you are treated as a loyal guest or a walk-in when you arrive.
Here is the thing nobody in India writes down. Essentially every major hotel loyalty programme, global and Indian, excludes third-party bookings from earning points and from counting as elite nights. Two Indian chains name Indian booking sites explicitly in their own published terms. Your bank travel portal is a third-party booking too, which means the eye-catching multiplier it advertises on hotels is compensation for a loss, not a bonus on top of one.
This guide covers eight cards worth using for hotels, then the parts of the subject that decide the outcome: the exclusion wall you are booking through, why elite status is worth more than points on the hotel side, what really changed for Indian free night certificates in March 2026, and why paying at the hotel desk rather than prepaying quietly changes how your card sees the transaction.
Hotels Work Differently From Flights
Flights have effectively one inventory pool and near-perfect price parity, so the booking channel is close to reward-neutral. Hotels are the opposite, for three structural reasons that no Indian page states.
One: member-only rates are contractually invisible to booking sites. The large chains publish member rates available only through their own websites, apps, reservation centres and authorised travel agents. One global programme quantifies its own member discount as at least two per cent on weekdays and up to five per cent at weekends. A booking site cannot show you that rate because it is contractually not allowed to.
Two: best rate guarantees pay you to shop elsewhere and then book direct. This is the most underused consumer lever in Indian travel. The major chains will match a lower price you find on another site and then discount it further, typically by a fifth to a quarter, or credit you points instead. Claims usually have to be made within twenty-four hours of booking and before check-in. Flights have no equivalent. The correct routine is therefore: shop the booking sites, find the lowest number, book direct, claim the match.
Three: the commission arithmetic makes withholding points rational. Hotels pay booking sites a substantial commission, and would then have to buy loyalty points from their own programme on top of that. Withholding the points is simply cheaper than paying twice. That is why the exclusion is universal rather than a quirk of one chain.
So on the hotel side, booking direct is not a small preference. It is where the member rate, the rate guarantee, the points, the elite nights and the on-property treatment all live at once.
Best Credit Card for Hotel Booking: Quick Comparison
Read the best channel column first. On a hotel booking the channel usually moves more value than the card does, and the card that pays the highest multiplier is the one that costs you the most on the hotel side.

The 8 Best Credit Cards for Hotel Booking Reviewed
Each card is assessed on where it should actually be used, what it costs you on the hotel loyalty side, and whether its fee is recoverable at a realistic number of stays a year.
1. Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Credit Card – Real Hotel Elite Status, Not a Discount Card
This is the only card we can link that grants genuine hotel elite status rather than a paid discount membership, and the distinction matters more than anything else on this page. Status is not points. Status improves every single stay you pay cash for, with room upgrades, late checkout and recognition at the desk, and the elite night credits this card issues each year count toward the higher tiers you would otherwise have to sleep your way to. India first co-branded hotel credit card launched in August 2023, and nothing since has matched what it grants.
The free night awards became materially more useful in March 2026, and nobody in India has done the arithmetic. This card issues its certificates at the lowest denomination the programme offers, and in March 2026 the programme raised the number of points you may add on top of a certificate from fifteen thousand to twenty-five thousand. That lifts the ceiling of every certificate this card issues by a third, and because the card starts from the lowest denomination, it is proportionally the biggest beneficiary of that change anywhere in the world. Read the constraints too: standard rooms only, one room at a time, one year validity, no extension, no conversion back to points, and resort fees remain yours.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| What it grants | Genuine hotel programme elite status |
| Elite Nights | Annual elite night credits that compound toward higher tiers |
| Free Night | Awards on activation, renewal and spend milestones |
| Best Channel | The hotel own site or app, always |
| Annual Fee | Premium, designed around the free night awards |
| Watch Out | A free night is a standard room only, and expires a year from issue |
- Grants genuine hotel elite status, not a paid discount membership
- Annual elite night credits compound toward higher tiers
- Free night award ceiling improved by a third in March 2026
- Hotel programmes are far more stable than airline programmes
- Premium annual fee that needs real hotel usage to justify
- Free night awards cover standard rooms only and expire in a year
- Worth very little if you do not stay at this hotel group
2. Axis Bank Magnus Credit Card – Points That Still Reach a Hotel Programme
This card sits on one of the largest transfer programmes in India, and hotel transfers are still part of it. It is also the clearest illustration of why hotel points should not be hoarded. On the second of April 2026 this issuer removed two of the biggest global hotel programmes from its transfer list with immediate effect and no advance notice, leaving an Indian hotel group and one international chain among the remaining hotel options.
What happened next is the part nobody has connected, and it belongs in any honest write-up. One month later, on the first of May 2026, the Indian hotel programme that is still a transfer partner here halved its own quarterly conversion cap into the very programme this issuer had just dropped. So the direct route closed in April and the indirect workaround was throttled in May. Anyone who was sitting on a balance planning to move it across at leisure lost both doors in five weeks. The lesson is not that this is a bad card. It is that transfer routes are commercial contracts, and you should move points only when you have found the room you want to book.

|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Bank miles, transferable to remaining hotel partners |
| Best Channel | Hotel site direct, or the issuer portal if you accept the trade |
| Transfers | Two major hotel partners removed with no notice in April 2026 |
| Annual Fee | Premium, with a spend-linked waiver |
| Lounge | High allowance, spend-gated |
| Watch Out | The indirect route to the removed hotel programme was throttled a month later |
- One of the largest transfer partner programmes in India
- Hotel transfer options still available after the cull
- High lounge allowance and strong premium benefits
- Points redeem across a general catalogue as a fallback
- Two major hotel transfer partners removed with no notice in April 2026
- The indirect route through an Indian hotel programme was halved in May 2026
- Lounge access is spend-gated despite widespread claims otherwise
3. SBI Card ELITE – Accelerated Earning on Hotel Spending
A mainstream premium card that treats hotels as an accelerated travel category is a perfectly reasonable way to pay for a hotel, provided you book it in the right place. That is the whole argument of this article: the card multiplier is one number, and the hotel points and elite nights you keep or forfeit is a second number, and only one of them appears in comparison tables.
Booked on the hotel own site with this card, you collect the card reward and the hotel programme reward on the same stay. Booked on a travel agency site, you may still get a card reward but you will get nothing from the hotel, because essentially every hotel loyalty programme excludes third-party bookings from earning points and from counting as elite nights. Two Indian chains name Indian travel agency sites explicitly in their own terms. So use this card, and use it on the hotel website. One correction while we are here: in January 2026 this issuer split its lounge estate into two different lounge lists by card tier rather than adding a spend gate, which several comparison pages describe incorrectly.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Bank reward points |
| Best Channel | Hotel direct, so the stay also earns hotel points |
| Transfers | Available across this issuer travel range |
| Annual Fee | Premium, with a high spend-linked waiver |
| Lounge | Fixed annual allowance rather than a quarterly gate |
| Watch Out | Lounge estate split into two lists in January 2026 |
- Accelerated earning on travel and hotel spending
- Fixed annual lounge allowance is easier to plan than a quarterly gate
- Transfer options across the issuer travel range
- Widely accepted premium product with a mature service network
- Premium annual fee with a high waiver threshold
- Lounge estate split into two lists in January 2026
- No hotel elite status attached, unlike a true hotel co-brand
4. BOBCARD Eterna Credit Card – A Hotel Card for People Without Status Ambitions
Not everybody wants to chase hotel elite status, and for those people the calculation is simpler and this card fits it well. If you are never going to accumulate elite nights, the loss you take by booking through a travel agency or an issuer portal is only the hotel points, which for an occasional traveller are worth little anyway. That frees you to book wherever the total price is lowest and simply earn your card reward on top.
That said, one habit is worth keeping even without status ambitions. Hotel chains run best rate guarantees, and they are unusually generous: several major programmes will match a lower price found elsewhere and then discount it further by a fifth to a quarter, or credit you points instead. The practical routine is to shop the travel agency sites, find the lowest number, and then claim the match on the hotel own site, usually within twenty-four hours of booking and before check-in. That single habit is worth more per booking than the difference between most cards on this page.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Bank reward points |
| Best Channel | Wherever the total is lowest, since there is no channel penalty |
| Transfers | Limited |
| Annual Fee | Mid-tier, with a spend-linked waiver |
| Lounge | Generous domestic and international allowance |
| Watch Out | No hotel status, so book direct only for the rate, not the recognition |
- Generous lounge allowance for a mid-premium fee
- No heavy channel penalty, so book wherever the total is lowest
- Top Visa tier brings a second ungated lounge quota
- Reduced forex markup helps on international hotel bookings
- No hotel elite status attached
- Limited hotel transfer options
- Lounge participation lists changed repeatedly in 2025 and 2026
5. IDFC FIRST Mayura Credit Card – Zero Forex on Overseas Hotel Bookings
International hotel bills are where forex markup does the most damage, because a hotel bill is one large transaction rather than many small ones. This card carries zero markup, which on a week abroad is worth more than almost any accelerated reward rate you could earn instead. If you book hotels overseas with any regularity, that is the single strongest argument on this page.
One trap specific to hotels deserves naming. When you pay at a foreign hotel desk, the terminal will often offer to bill you in Indian currency, and several people accept it thinking they are avoiding a bank charge. They are not. The hotel payment provider sets that exchange rate with a margin of three to five per cent, and several Indian issuers now levy their own separate charge on unit of currency-billed transactions at international locations anyway, one of them at a rate higher than its own ordinary forex markup. The same clause on at least two issuers also applies to unit of currency payments made in India to hotel booking sites registered overseas. Always pay in the local currency, and check which currency a foreign-registered booking site is charging you in before you confirm.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Bank reward points |
| Best Channel | Hotel direct, in the local currency |
| Forex Markup | Zero on the markup line |
| Annual Fee | Substantial, with accelerated earning conditions |
| Lounge | Gated on the previous calendar month |
| Watch Out | Paying a foreign hotel in Indian currency triggers a separate charge |
- Zero forex markup, which matters most on a large hotel bill
- Lounge access at both ends of the journey
- Bank points rather than a currency tied to one hotel chain
- Visa Infinite acceptance at hotels worldwide
- Lounge access gated on the previous calendar month
- Points now expire on a two-year clock
- Substantial annual fee with accelerated earning conditions
6. Scapia Federal Bank Credit Card – Hotel Bookings With No Annual Fee to Recover
For someone booking three or four hotel stays a year, a card that costs nothing to hold usually beats a card with a better rate and a real fee. This one adds zero forex markup, which covers the overseas half of the problem, and includes lounge access. There is no annual calculation to run and nothing to justify at renewal.
Be clear about what a platform booking costs you beyond the price. Coins earned here are redeemable on that platform own travel bookings, which makes them store credit rather than money, and a stay booked through any platform rather than the hotel is treated by the hotel as a third-party booking. That means no hotel points, no elite night credit and, on several chains, no on-property elite benefits either. If you have no status and want none, that costs you very little. If you are working toward status, it costs you nights you cannot buy back, and you should book direct and take the smaller card reward.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Closed-loop platform coins |
| Best Channel | The platform own booking flow, or the hotel direct |
| Forex Markup | Zero on the markup line |
| Annual Fee | No joining fee and no annual fee |
| Lounge | Included, gated on a monthly spend condition |
| Watch Out | Platform bookings earn no hotel points or elite nights |
- No joining fee and no annual fee to recover
- Zero forex markup on overseas hotel bills
- Lounge access included on a no-fee card
- Simple earning with no caps to track
- Coins are closed-loop platform credit, not transferable points
- Platform bookings forfeit hotel points and elite night credit
- Lounge access gated on a monthly spend condition
7. Axis Bank Privilege Credit Card – Mid-Premium Hotel Earning With a Signature Quota
For someone taking half a dozen hotel stays a year, a mid-premium card with real portal access and a Signature-tier lounge quota is usually the right level. You get accelerated earning on hotel and travel spending without paying for concierge and golf you will never use, and the Signature tier brings the network lounge quota with it, which carries no spend condition.
This issuer is one of the few in India that defines the booking channel explicitly in its published terms, naming which of the merchant direct, its own portal and third-party travel agencies earn the accelerated rate. Read that before you assume your usual booking habit is being rewarded, because on at least one card in this range a travel agency booking earns the base rate rather than the accelerated one. And note the same issuer raised its charge on unit of currency-billed international transactions sharply in August 2026, which matters at a foreign hotel desk more than almost anywhere else.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Bank reward points |
| Best Channel | Hotel direct or the issuer portal, both defined in the terms |
| Transfers | Available, restructured April 2026 |
| Annual Fee | Mid-premium, with a spend-linked waiver |
| Lounge | Signature tier quota plus issuer allowance |
| Watch Out | This issuer prices the booking channel explicitly; read which qualify |
- Accelerated hotel and travel earning at a mid-premium fee
- Signature tier brings an ungated network lounge quota
- Issuer publishes its channel definitions clearly, which is rare
- Access to the issuer transfer programme
- Travel agency bookings can earn the base rate, not the accelerated one
- This issuer raised its unit of currency-billing charge sharply in August 2026
- Excluded-category list on this issuer is the longest in the market
8. HDFC Bank Credit Card – The Deepest Portal Multiplier on Hotels
This issuer portal carries the highest published hotel multiplier in the Indian market, roughly double what it pays on flights, and that is why it appears on every list. Two mechanics that no page explains turn it from a simple win into a judgement call.
First, the cap. Hotels and flights draw on a single shared monthly accelerated points pool per card rather than separate ones. Because hotels earn at double the flight rate, hotel bookings exhaust that shared pool twice as fast per unit of currency spent. Book an expensive hotel early in the month and your flight the following week may earn nothing accelerated at all. Second, and this is the point of the whole article: the portal is the merchant of record, so the hotel treats your stay exactly as it treats a travel agency booking. You forfeit hotel points, elite night credit and on-property elite benefits. The high multiplier is compensation for that loss, not a bonus on top of it. If you have no status and want none, take it. If you are building status, do not.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Reward Currency | Bank reward points |
| Best Channel | Issuer portal for the multiplier, hotel direct for the loyalty |
| Portal Rate | Highest published hotel multiplier in India |
| Cap | Hotels and flights share ONE monthly accelerated pool |
| Annual Fee | Varies by card in the range |
| Watch Out | A portal booking forfeits hotel points and elite nights |
- Highest published hotel multiplier of any Indian issuer portal
- Broad transfer partner access on the premium range
- Widest merchant and offer network in the Indian market
- Hotels and flights both covered by one portal
- Hotels and flights share one monthly cap and hotels drain it twice as fast
- Portal bookings forfeit hotel points, elite nights and elite benefits
- Cancellation runs through an extra party with a processing fee deducted
The Exclusion Wall: What a Third-Party Booking Actually Costs
This is the section the rest of the internet is missing, and it is not our opinion. It is what the hotel programmes say in their own published terms.
The global chains all exclude third-party bookings from earning. One programme lists non-qualifying rates as including any room booked through a tour operator, online travel channel or other third-party channel, naming the large international booking sites individually, and states that such stays earn neither points nor elite night credit. Another lists ineligible stays as including wholesale and tour operator packages, travel agency discount rates and third-party website bookings, and adds separately that on-property elite benefits are denied on any reservation booked through a non-direct channel. A third excludes online travel agency and third-party channel bookings by name.
And the Indian chains do the same thing, naming Indian sites. One large Indian hotel group states that members are not eligible to earn its points on room spends arising from bookings made through online travel agents, and then names the major Indian booking platforms in the list. Another Indian chain states that any booking made via third-party sites will not be eligible for member points, naming an Indian platform alongside the international ones, and extends the exclusion to tour operators, wholesalers and travel agents.
So the honest accounting on any third-party hotel booking is three losses, not one: no hotel points, no elite night credit toward status, and on several chains no on-property elite benefits either, which means no upgrade, no late checkout and no breakfast even if you already hold status.
The exception that proves the rule. Traditional travel agents are treated differently from booking websites, and the distinction is not human versus machine. One chain qualifying-channel wording names accredited retail travel agents booking through the established global distribution systems; another carves out authorised travel agents as qualifying while excluding online travel agents by name. The line is drawn between an agent acting as your agent of record and a website acting as the merchant of record. If your employer books your hotels through a corporate travel desk on a global distribution system, you are probably still earning hotel points and elite nights. If they book on a consumer website, you are not.
The pay-at-hotel trick that flips the coding
Here is a mechanic that is genuinely useful and appears nowhere in Indian coverage. Booking a hotel through a website and paying for it there is not the same as booking through that website and paying at the hotel.
If you prepay on the booking site, the site is the merchant and the transaction typically codes as a travel agency. If you select the pay-at-hotel rate on the same listing, the hotel captures your card at the desk and the transaction codes as lodging. Same booking, same site, different merchant category, and therefore potentially a different reward rate on any card that bonuses hotels specifically rather than travel generally.
It changes the card side. It does not change the hotel side: the rate is still a third-party rate, so you still earn no hotel points and no elite nights. Use it to protect your card reward, not to recover your hotel loyalty.
One caution: hotel coding is not perfectly reliable. Properties within the same chain sometimes code under the generic lodging category rather than their chain-specific one, so a card that bonuses only a narrow list of chain codes can silently miss. Test with one booking and read your statement.
The Double Loss on Issuer Travel Portals
Your bank travel portal advertises the highest hotel multiplier of any channel, often double what it pays on flights. Understand what you are buying.
The portal is a third-party booking. The bank own terms typically describe it as facilitating payment rather than being the merchant, and the fulfilment partner is the merchant of record. To the hotel, a portal booking is indistinguishable from a booking site booking. So you forfeit hotel points, elite night credit and on-property elite benefits, exactly as above.
The multiplier is the price of that loss, not a bonus on top of it. That reframing is the whole point. Whether it is a fair price depends entirely on one question: do you have or want hotel elite status? If the answer is no, the portal multiplier is genuinely good value and you should take it. If the answer is yes, the elite nights you forfeit cannot be bought back at any price, and the multiplier is not compensation, it is a bribe to stop building status.
Then there is the cap, and it behaves worse on hotels than on flights. At least one large Indian issuer runs a single shared monthly accelerated points pool across hotels and flights rather than separate ones. Because hotels earn at roughly double the flight rate, hotel bookings drain that shared pool twice as fast per unit of currency. A big hotel booking early in the month can leave your flight the following week earning nothing accelerated at all. Nobody schedules around this because nobody has been told it works this way.
And the fare itself is in question. Portal room rates are set by the fulfilment partner, not the hotel, and no Indian issuer portal publishes a rate-parity guarantee. Price it against the hotel own site, including taxes, before you trust the multiplier.
Finally, refunds. A portal booking puts an extra party between you and your money. One large issuer portal terms require you to notify the bank even if you cancelled directly with the hotel, and state that the bank will not entertain a cancellation raised only with the hotel; partner convenience and service fees are non-refundable. Another quotes fifteen to twenty business days for a hotel refund. Booking direct on a flexible rate frequently means there was no charge to reverse at all.
Elite Status Beats Points on the Hotel Side
This is the inversion of the flight article. On flights, the currency is what matters. On hotels, status is.
Points buy one stay. Status improves every stay you pay cash for, for a whole year: room upgrades, late checkout, a welcome benefit that is often breakfast at the higher tiers, and bonus points on top of everything you earn anyway. And elite nights, unlike points, cannot be bought.
Status got cheaper in 2026, which strengthens this argument. One major global programme lowered its elite thresholds with effect from January 2026, cutting the nights needed for its mid tier and its high tier substantially and adding a new top tier with a confirmable upgrade you can book at the time of reservation rather than hope for at check-in. Fewer nights to reach status makes every night you do not forfeit to a third-party booking more valuable.
Now the correction that four ranking pages get wrong. Several premium Indian cards bundle what looks like hotel status and is not. A widely bundled hotel membership on Indian premium cards is a paid discount programme, offering percentage discounts on rooms and food and beverage. It grants no loyalty points, no elite night credit and no elite recognition at the property. It is a discount card, not status. The same applies to the paid dining and stay memberships bundled by some issuers with Indian luxury chains. Read the benefit name carefully: a discount membership and a loyalty tier are different things wearing similar words.
That membership was also discontinued for new sign-ups and renewals across ten Asia-Pacific markets from April 2026, continuing only in India and one other market. If your card sells you on it, check it is still live where you are.
What genuinely grants status among cards you can get in India: the hotel co-brand on our list grants real elite status plus annual elite night credits, and one super-premium charge card grants mid-tier status across several global hotel programmes at once. Almost nothing else does.
One difference worth knowing between card status and earned status: card status is granted, not banked. It lapses when you stop paying the fee. Nights you actually slept accrue permanently toward lifetime tiers. Card-granted elite night credits do count toward those thresholds, which is what makes them worth more than a status match, but the underlying tier only survives while the card does.
Free Night Awards and the March 2026 Change Nobody Applied to India
A free night certificate is the most misunderstood hotel benefit in India, and something happened to it in March 2026 that no Indian page has done the arithmetic on.
How a certificate works. It covers one night in a standard guest room, inclusive of the room rate and applicable taxes. It cannot be used for a suite. It expires one year from issuance and cannot be extended, transferred or converted back into points. You can only book one room at a time with it. Resort fees, where a property charges them, remain payable by you. And crucially, a certificate is issued at a stated points value, and you are allowed to top it up with your own points if the room you want costs more than that value.
What changed. In March 2026 one major global programme raised the number of points you may add on top of a certificate from fifteen thousand to twenty-five thousand. International coverage discussed this in terms of the higher-denomination certificates issued by cards in other markets.
What that means in India, which nobody has worked out. The Indian hotel co-brand issues its certificates at the lowest denomination the programme offers. Before the change, a certificate plus the maximum top-up reached a thirty thousand point room. After the change, the same certificate reaches a forty thousand point room. That is a third more reach on every certificate the Indian card issues, and because the Indian card starts from the bottom of the range, it is proportionally the biggest beneficiary of the change anywhere in the world.
And this is why certificates survived dynamic pricing when points did not. A certificate is denominated in nights, not in currency. Its top-up is fixed in points, but the room it buys is priced at whatever the market bears. As nightly award prices inflate, a fixed certificate captures more real value, not less. A points balance is the opposite: a long position in a currency the programme can devalue unilaterally and silently, which is exactly what has been happening.
The dynamic pricing timeline, briefly. One major programme announced the removal of its award chart in late 2021, moved to dynamic pricing during 2022, and from 2023 removed the remaining caps entirely. Another eliminated award categories back in 2017 and has devalued incrementally ever since. A third has published no chart for years. There is now no published price for a hotel award night at any of the big three, which means there is no way to know in advance what your points are worth. The benefits that survived that shift are the ones not denominated in points: certificates, elite status, and the fifth-night-free mechanic on award stays.
Other Cards Worth Knowing About
We only link cards we can earn a commission on, and on hotels that leaves out several of the strongest options. No links on these.
Amex Platinum Charge (India) grants mid-tier elite status across more than one global hotel programme simultaneously, plus memberships with Indian luxury chains. It is the deepest hotel status stack available on any Indian card, and nothing on our list competes with it if you can meet the eligibility and live with the network acceptance. Note that Amex Indian issuance has been intermittent, so check current availability before planning around it.
HSBC Taj Credit Card grants a genuine top-tier membership in an Indian luxury chain loyalty programme, rather than a paid discount card. If your travel is domestic and skews to one Indian luxury group, this is the most directly useful hotel card in the country.
HDFC Bank Infinia and Diners Club Black sit on the deepest hotel portal multipliers and have the broadest transfer access, with the portal caveats described above.
Indian hotel loyalty programmes worth knowing: one large Indian group runs a five-tier programme paying a rising percentage of room spend, and several Indian banks transfer their own points into it. A second Indian chain runs a tiered programme whose currency is spendable across a broader retail ecosystem. A third major Indian luxury group runs a programme with no points at all, offering upfront discounts and member rates instead, and no Indian credit card feeds it.
One warning about the transfer route. In April 2026 a large Indian issuer removed two major global hotel programmes from its transfer list with no notice. The workaround was to move points into an Indian hotel programme that still transfers onward to one of them. Then, in May 2026, that Indian programme halved its own quarterly transfer cap into exactly that destination. The direct door closed and the side door narrowed five weeks later. Do not build a hotel points strategy that depends on a two-step transfer surviving.
How to Choose a Card for Hotel Booking
Answer one question first: do you want hotel elite status? Everything follows from it. If yes, book direct always, and choose the card that grants status or elite nights. If no, book wherever the total is lowest and choose the card with the best multiplier on that channel.
Adopt the shop-then-book-direct habit. Compare on the booking sites, then book on the hotel site and claim the best rate guarantee if the hotel is more expensive. A match plus a further discount of a fifth to a quarter beats the difference between any two cards on this page.
Treat the portal multiplier as a price, not a reward. It buys the hotel points and elite nights you are giving up. Decide whether that trade suits you rather than assuming the bigger number wins.
Check whether hotels and flights share one monthly cap on your card. If they do, and hotels earn at double the rate, sequence your bookings across months rather than stacking them.
On international stays, weigh forex markup above reward rate. A hotel bill is one large transaction, which is where a markup difference does the most damage, and a unit of currency-billed hotel terminal is the most expensive way to pay a foreign hotel.
Prefer paying at the hotel where the price is the same. It codes as lodging rather than as a travel agency, it usually leaves nothing to reverse if you cancel, and it keeps you out of a multi-party refund chain.
Read the benefit name before you value it. A paid discount membership is not elite status, however similar the words look on the product page.
Mistakes to Avoid
Booking a chain hotel through a booking site out of habit. You lose the points, the elite night credit and often the on-property benefits, and you may be paying more than the member rate you were never shown.
Assuming your bank portal is different from a booking site. To the hotel it is not. The portal is the merchant of record and the stay is a third-party booking.
Reading a paid discount membership as elite status. Several premium Indian cards bundle one, and four ranking pages present it as Bonvoy status. It grants no points, no elite nights and no recognition.
Never claiming a best rate guarantee. It is the highest-value, lowest-effort lever in hotel booking and almost nobody in India uses it. Claims are usually due within twenty-four hours of booking and before check-in.
Letting a free night certificate expire. One year from issue, no extensions, no conversion back to points. Diarise it the day it lands.
Trying to use a certificate on a suite. Standard rooms only, one room at a time, and resort fees are still yours.
Accepting unit of currency billing at a foreign hotel desk. The hotel provider sets that rate with a margin, and several Indian issuers now charge separately for unit of currency-billed international transactions anyway.
Building a hotel points plan around a two-step transfer. In April and May 2026 an Indian issuer closed the direct route and the workaround narrowed a month later.
Stacking a big hotel booking and a big flight booking in the same month on a card where they share one accelerated points pool.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I book on a travel site or on the hotel own website?
Direct, in almost every case where the hotel belongs to a chain with a loyalty programme. Two large Indian hotel groups name Indian booking platforms in their own terms as ineligible for member points, and the global chains do the same for international sites. Booking direct also unlocks member rates that booking sites are contractually barred from showing, and it gives you a best rate guarantee that typically matches a lower price and then discounts it by a further fifth to a quarter. Use the booking sites to shop, then book direct and claim.
My bank portal gives a huge multiplier on hotels. Why not use it?
Because the portal is the merchant of record, so the hotel treats your stay exactly as a third-party booking: no hotel points, no elite night credit, and on several chains no on-property elite benefits either. The multiplier is compensation for that loss rather than a bonus on top of it. Take it if you have no hotel status and want none. Skip it if you are building status, because forgone elite nights cannot be bought back. Also check whether hotels and flights share one monthly cap on your card, because hotels usually drain it twice as fast.
Is the hotel membership bundled with my premium card the same as elite status?
Almost certainly not, and several ranking pages get this wrong. The membership most commonly bundled with Indian premium cards is a paid discount programme offering percentage savings on rooms and dining. It grants no loyalty points, no elite night credit and no elite recognition at the property. Genuine status on an Indian card comes from the hotel co-brand, which grants a real elite tier plus annual elite night credits, or from one super-premium charge card that grants mid-tier status across several programmes.
How do free night certificates work, and did something change in 2026?
Yes. In March 2026 one major programme raised the number of points you may add on top of a certificate from fifteen thousand to twenty-five thousand. Because the Indian hotel co-brand issues its certificates at the lowest denomination that programme offers, each certificate now reaches a forty thousand point room instead of a thirty thousand point room, which is a third more reach. The constraints are unchanged: standard rooms only, one room at a time, expires one year from issue, cannot be extended or converted back to points, and resort fees remain yours.
Should I prepay or choose the pay-at-hotel rate?
Pay at the hotel where the price is comparable. Prepaying on a booking site typically codes the transaction as a travel agency, while paying at the desk codes it as lodging, which is what a card with a hotel bonus is looking for. It also usually leaves nothing to reverse if you cancel, and keeps you out of a multi-party refund chain: one issuer portal quotes fifteen to twenty business days for a hotel refund, and another requires you to notify the bank even if you cancelled directly with the hotel. Note it does not restore your hotel points, because the rate is still a third-party rate.
Final Verdict
The best credit card for hotel booking depends on a question about you rather than about the card: are you building hotel elite status, or not?
If you are, the Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Credit Card is the only card we can link that grants genuine elite status plus annual elite night credits, and its free night awards became a third more useful in March 2026 in a way nobody in India has noticed. Book direct, always, and treat every third-party booking as a night you have thrown away. If you are not building status, the calculation flips entirely: the HDFC Bank range carries the deepest hotel portal multipliers in India and you should take them, subject to checking the room rate and watching the shared monthly cap. And if your stays are mostly overseas, the IDFC FIRST Mayura zero forex markup will be worth more on a week-long hotel bill than any multiplier on this page.
Whatever you choose, adopt one habit this week. Shop the booking sites, then book on the hotel own website, and claim the best rate guarantee if the hotel is more expensive. It is the highest-value, lowest-effort move in hotel booking, it takes about five minutes, and almost nobody in India does it.
